Carmen Though George Bizet’s Carmen is now considered one of the greatest operas of all time, its initial 1875 production was plagued by controversy over its titillating themes of seduction and murder. Carmen’s tempting of the soldier Don José away from his beloved Micaëla, her consorting with the toreador Escamillo, and her eventual death at the hands of her jealous ex were considered by some critics to be unfit for audiences. Though Bizet did not live to see his brainchild hailed as one of the first operas to make use of realistic settings such as the cigarette factory where Carmen and her chorus members work, audiences can still enjoy the loping strains of “The Toreador Song” and the sudden bursts of sound supporting Carmen’s scale-vaulting voice during the habanera. Romeo and Juliet Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl defy their families to be together: it’s not an unfamiliar story. What sets Romeo & Juliet apart is what happens next. It’s an ending that defies spoiler warnings—Sergei Prokofiev, Leonardo DiCaprio, and high-school literature teachers everywhere have made the finale famous—but knowing what’s coming doesn’t make it any less devastating. The double-suicide, brought about by bad luck, worse timing, and some faulty communication, becomes all the more tragic when you consider their ages: Juliet is just under 14, Romeo not much older.
